Illustrator Stephen Gilpin will be attending the Iola Family Reading Festival on Sept. 18, 2010. Stephen grew up in Iola and is the son of Jim and Karen Gilpin, so he’s well known to many of you. Stephen is an artist who has illustrated many children’s books, working in collaboration with several authors. His How to Get a Gorilla Out of Your Bathtub won the 2008 Bill Martin Jr. Picture Book Award. Other books he has illustrated include Pirate Mom, The Three Cabritos, My Daddy Snores, and the series The Extraordinary Adventures of Ordinary Boy. The review in School Library Journal of the first book in this series says “Gilpin’s illustrations are sharp and witty”, while Booklist’s review of Pirate Mom states “With clean lines, muted colors, and comic-style exaggerations of the character’s features, Gilpin’s illustrations make the most of the humorous situations”.
Mark your calendar for September 18 and plan to attend the Family Reading Festival. Sponsored by the Iola Public Library, the Festival is made possible by funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
Wow! We accomplished the move faster than anticipated. The library will re-open Friday. Entry will be on the west side of the building. We do not yet have the portable wheelchair ramp ready. Come and see our new (temporary) digs!
We’re making good progress in our move to the west room. Check out the photos and learn more on our renovation blog at iolalibraryrenovation.wordpress.com. You can keep following our progress on this blog throughout the renovation.
The library will close beginning March 8 to relocate collections and clear out the adult main reading room for the renovation. We anticipate being closed between one and two weeks. Limited service and limited hours will be provided in the Flewharty-Powell Annex to Iola Public Library while we are closed. For more information, click on the “Q & A Library Closing” tab.
We also have posted more information about the first phase of the renovation on our renovation blog at iolalibraryrenovation.wordpress.com.

Were you impressed or moved by the story of how Greg Mortenson has been building schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan? That story is told in the Iola Reads books “Three Cups of Tea”. Here’s a way you can advance his work. Iola Reads is participating in “Pennies for Peace”. Pennies are being collected in USD #257 schools and at the Iola Public Library. Proceeds go towards helping Mortenson’s Central Asia Institute build more schools in this vital region. Drop your pennies in the container on the service desk at the library. Additionally, any donation to Iola Reads above $2.00 will go for this project. For more information see www.penniesforpeace.org.
Thank you!
